The Mahindra Thar EV concept made its debut this August, and just recently, the 5-door SUV received homologation in India. Thar.e will be constructed on the all-new INGLO electric platform
Earlier this year in August, Mahindra & Mahindra introduced the Thar.e Concept, an electrified 5-door version of the beloved off-road vehicle. This concept provided a glimpse into the future and highlighted the fresh design approach for the Thar SUV. While its release is still some time in the future, the Thar EV recently received homologation in India. Let’s explore what we currently know about the forthcoming Mahindra Thar.e 4X4 off-road vehicle.
Platform and Dimensions
The Thar electric is departing from the traditional ladder-frame construction of the current ICE model and instead opting for a cutting-edge electric-specific skateboard platform known as the INGLO platform, specifically adapted and named P1 to suit the Thar EV’s rugged nature.
The INGLO platform features a modular structure that is highly adaptable in terms of length, wheelbase, and height. Leveraging this flexibility, the Thar.e’s wheelbase is expected to fall within the range of 2,775 mm to 2,975 mm. This setup is likely to provide an impressive ground clearance of approximately 250mm, solidifying its reputation as an exceptionally capable off-road vehicle.
Powertrain
The Thar electric is expected to incorporate BYD’s Blade battery pack, renowned for its long-term reliability and extended range capabilities. The electric motor could potentially be sourced from Volkswagen through their recent partnership, focusing on battery technology exchange.
While the exact battery capacity remains undisclosed, reports indicate a 60 kWh unit. To meet the rigorous 4X4 requirements, a dual motor setup, one on each axle, will be included in the package. The claimed range is anticipated to exceed 400 kilometers on a single charge.
Mahindra Thar EV Homologation, Launch and Price In India
Mahindra has successfully homologated the Thar.e in the Indian market, signaling that development is progressing at full speed, and we may start seeing its test mules on the road from next year. However, in terms of the launch timeline, Mahindra already has its hands full with the XUV.e and BE range of electric cars scheduled for release until 2026. This suggests that the official launch of the production-ready Mahindra Thar.e is still quite some time away.
As for pricing, it’s expected that the SUV will be positioned well above Rs. 20 lakh (ex-showroom).
